Job Description

The Heavy Equipment Operator position requires the operation of one or more types of heavy equipment, such as bobcat, dozer, front-end loader, grader, scraper, skidsteer and other pieces of equipment used in the construction of roads, parking lots, city streets or roads. The operator is responsible for maintaining the equipment in efficient condition and is expected to perform minor maintenance. Receives instructions from the foreman and helps with site preparation if necessary.


Functions and responsibilities


  • Operate heavy equipment safely and effectively to minimize the risk of injury, property damage, or loss of life.


  • Follow company and OSHA/MSHA safety procedures. Communicate concerns to the foreman, superintendent or safety director.


  • Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects or necessary repairs to supervisor; clean the equipment.


  • Follow daily procedures and protocols established in job orientation and training.


  • Interact with co-workers and the public in a courteous and respectful manner.


  • Assist when and where necessary, including operating other equipment and other manual work.

Requirements


  • Ability to read, write and speak in English and perform simple mathematical calculations.

  • Ability to drive and operate equipment under variable work conditions and ability to perform manual work requiring periods of intense physical exertion and potential exposure to adverse weather conditions.

  • Ability to learn, understand and carry out written and oral instructions and comply with company policies and safety standards.

  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment and willingness to learn and receive direction.

  • Ability and willingness to travel for extended periods and work long hours to perform job duties.

  • Possess or have the ability to obtain a valid driver's license.
